Taylor Momsen Is A Cynical Little Girl
And who the hell is Taylor Momsen, you ask? It turns out that 16 year old Momsen is one of the actresses on Gossip Girl, and that she has now decided she also wants to be a rock star.
I know, it sounds like a bad joke, but it turns out this kid is actually a good singer who writes very catchy alternative rock. Given her looks, her voice and her music, not to mention being backed by the folks behind the Black Eyed Peas, chances are that Momsen and her band The Pretty Reckless are going to be big and that she will therefore have an impact on how other girlies see the world.
And it is this last factor that concerns me.
Momsen’s lyrics are the kind of dark, pessimistic stuff that back in the eighties one would have expected from a world-weary 45 year divorcee with a sagging bust line and the beginnings of an ulcer – Marianne Faithful comes to mind. These days of course, we get this kind of ‘tude from a kid who, no matter how often she’s gotten laid, cannot have been in a romantic relationship lasting more than a couple of years.
Of the band’s songs available on YouTube the most cynical about men is easily “He loves You”…

Momsen is a self declared fan of Debbie Harry so for purposes of comparison here’s a snippet from “In The Flesh,” written by Harry and Stein in 1976 when Harry was thirty one…

How things have changed! Even Heart of Glass, the darkest Blondie love song I can think of, seems saccharine compared to “He loves you”!
And as is so common these days, Momsen isn’t happy keeping her misandry in her lyrics, telling Teen Vogue last year that she preferred older guys because…
“I’m not going to date someone who’s sixteen. Boys are so much less mature than girls as it is; there’s just no way—I would eat a boy my age alive.”
But apparently not even the older guys are enough for Little Ms Battery Hoarder these days as Momsen has recently declared that she’s not into guys, that she’s bored with them and that her vibrator is her best friend!
Still, Momsen’s only sixteen, so maybe she’ll grow into something more sensible -maybe she’ll avoid becoming another Madonna, another GaGa, or god help her, another Courtney Love. Frankly, I don’t think her chances of ever being normal are too good in a world that rewards bad female behavior by calling it strength and independence, so I will leave you with another of her lyrics…
