California Binning.

jessie canfield baby dumperCalifornia woman Jessie Canfield took time out from a surprise birthday party to sneak into a bedroom and squeeze out a brand new baby girl, who she then threw into the garbage bin.

When the baby was found by the trash collectors she was dead, and forensics are yet to determine if she was born that way or if mommy decided on a  post-natal abortion. According to the cops the poor woman claims she didn’t know she was pregnant! I know Californians are considered weird even by their fellow Americans but it’s hard to believe that it’s normal for Californian women to skip nine periods in a row!

Canfield did this thing despite California being one of the many US states that allows parents (read mothers) to drown their unwanted kittens. Errr excuse me, I meant “allows them to dump their unwanted babies” at places like fire stations and hospitals without facing any charges! This seems to increase the chances that Canfield went for the post-natal option – if the baby was born dead why not call the cops and tell then so? If she was born alive and unwanted why not dump her at a safe haven?

In a brutal infringement of this Sacred One’s right to choose whether her child is human or not, the authorities have arrested her and are looking into possible murder charges – but things don’t look too bleak for mama. The cop interviewed claims Canfield is “distraught over a tragic situation,” which is something highly unlikely to be said about a man whose baby has just been found dead in a garbage bin, so I think we are already getting a whiff of  the female privilege that will grant Canfield a slap on the wrist.

The article seems to start this exoneration process rolling by telling us that the “Dump Your Kittens For Free” law hasn’t gotten enough press! So you see, it’s society’s fault for giving this woman the privilege to dump her baby but neglecting to tell her about said privilege! They then veer off into a discussion on the psychological characteristics of  women who dump their babies in these safe havens. Given that Jessie Canfield dumped the baby not in a safe haven but in a garbage can, it’s hard to see why this is relevant, except of course that the quoted expert describes women who abandon their babies thusly…

“The women tend to share a “distorted, hysterical” state of mind, she said, “because they don’t know any alternative. They just want to find the fastest way to dispose of the baby and believe they can remain anonymous.”

Ah, so that’s the point – we’re supposed to think the same of Jessie Canfield! After all Jessie’s a woman – she couldn’t possibly have done this just out of callousness or evil!

Now, now Porky, you musn’t make her feel guilt or shameful. Even shamehalfful. That is ‘psychological / emotional violence’. She is distraught enough. In fact so distraughticated that society really ought to compensate her. Perhaps the reporter can lead the way and open the wallet/purse for a gratuitous donation.
