Brainless Gay Bashing Boofhead

Eddie McGuire has once again made a fool of himself. Who the hell is Eddie McGuire, my overseas readers ask themselves! The short answer is that Eddie McGuire is an Aussie wanker with the tact of Don Imus and the intellect of Howard Stern – one of those guys who was born with both feet in his mouth and his head up his ass.

During a recent commentating spot on the Winter Olympics, McGuire and lowbrow comedian Mick Molloy had a go at male figure skaters – not because figure skating is such a lame excuse for a sport but because of the obvious gayness of so many of the men involved.

With references to “not leaving anything in the closet” and to the gay-themed movie “Brokeback Mountain”, it was pretty obvious which aspect of these men was being mocked, and it wasn’t their athletic prowess. While I agree that the obviously gay Johnny Weir has a dress sense that would make Boy George blanch, any intelligent adult wanting to have a go at the atrocious fashion mistakes littering the Canadian ice should be able to do so without all the gay slurs. But perhaps that’s the problem with McGuire and Molloy – neither of them can lay any real claim to being either intelligent or adult.

I won’t go as far as to say that either of these guys is a homophobe, as it takes a lot more than a few stupid comments to rise to that level of bigotry, but their comments don’t do anyone any favors.

Fact is that homophobia is a BIG men’s issue, not because it makes life worse for the 5% of blokes who actually are queer, but because it helps to keep us all inside our little gender cages – it keeps us doing what the rich and powerful want us to do. Want to stay at home and look after your next kiddy rather than slave in the factory all week? You fuckin’ wuss! What are ya, some kind of poofter? Think it’s a good idea to talk about your feelings before you end up putting a gun to your temple? Geez, mate, better not drop the soap around you, hey?

As long as there is a stigma to being gay, accusations of homosexuality can always be used to keep men in their place, and as long as we have big-mouth blockheads like these two around, the fight for any real change will always be harder than it has to be.
